May 1, 2008: I-64 Construction Activities At A Glance- May 2008
During the month of May major reconstruction is well underway all along the I-64 corridor.  Project updates will be posted on the I-64 website at www.thenewi64.org.
  • At Spoede Road, soundwall foundations are being drilled and poured all along the north outer road. Soundwall posts and panels will be placed later in the summer.

  • Also at Spoede, earthwork is about to begin on the roundabouts that will control access to and from I-64 and the outer roads. A temporary detour route will be created and access to the outer roads will be possible only from the north side of the bridge. The Spoede Road bridge demolition is being considered for the end of May.

  • The first half of the Lindbergh Boulevard bridge deck will be poured Friday, May 2.

  • At Clayton/Warson the first pier cap for the new bridge has been poured and others are under construction. Excavation for the west abutment begins the first week of May, while construction of the east abutment is well underway. A total of 90 concrete girders will be set for that structure beginning at the end of May.

  • The McKnight Road bridge deck is scheduled to be poured the first week of May. Weather permitting the bridge could be open as soon as the end of the month. As soon as McKnight opens the McCutcheon Road bridge will close for demolition.

  • At Brentwood Boulevard the girders and deck panels are in place and deck rebar is being installed. The bridge deck is scheduled to be poured the third week of May. A full weekend closure of Brentwood is scheduled for the weekend of May 16-19 so that girders can be spliced for the east-to-north flyover ramp linking I-64 to I-170.

  • Final bridge construction is being completed at Boland Place and Highland Terrace. Highland Terrace should be reopened to traffic by the end of May with Boland shortly afterward.

  • The bridge deck for the Kingshighway Boulevard interchange is finished, and during the month of May crews will work on the approaches, barrier, bridge monuments, tie-ins with the roadway, some utility work, and sidewalks.

  • Excavation for the three bridges over I-170 will begin about the third week of May. The three bridges will carry I-64 mainline traffic as well as drivers going to and from Brentwood and Hanley Roads.

  • Setting bridge girders is scheduled to begin the last week of May at Clayton/Warson.
These activities are subject to change due to weather, equipment breakdowns, or other unforeseen circumstances. For the most up-to-date project information, please visit www.thenewi64.org. Any scheduling updates will be posted there first.

April 10, 2008: I-64 Quarterly Research Report Released

ST LOUIS - MoDOT's contracted research firm, HDR, has released its first quarterly report on the impact of the first two months of the Interstate 64 closure. The report evaluates the areas of communications, mobility and economics during January and February 2008.

The report includes the results of more than 1,700 people who have been surveyed by mail, on-line, and in person through Motorist Assist and at major retail locations. Satisfaction results were high with more than 90 percent reporting they were kept informed on the project with timely information. Three-quarters of respondents also were satisfied with the decision to close the road for two years of impacts instead of six-eight years of construction.

"We are very pleased with the initial results of the research report and surveys. Our efforts to keep people informed and keep traffic moving around the region are recognized and appreciated by the public," said Lesley Hoffarth, MoDOT's I-64 project director. "We strongly value the public's opinion and ask people to continue to take the online survey at least once a quarter for our research."

MoDOT hired HDR in December 2007 to complete a four-year research project on the impacts of the I-64 construction and closure. The research will look at before, during and after conditions on regional traffic mobility and economic impacts. Reports will be released quarterly and are available on the project website at http://www.thenewi64.org/new9_survey.jsp, click on "Take Our Survey" to find a link to the report.

The first quarter report also includes some initial traffic data and analysis. This data is still being evaluated but the initial results show traffic increases on the other interstates as well as increases in transit riders and carpoolers. Lastly, the report includes some initial feedback from business owners on the economic impact. The business survey responses show 97 percent satisfaction with MoDOT's execution of the project. The research team and the business community are collaborating on the best economic measures to evaluate the effects. Most of these reporting mechanisms tend to lag in collection times and will be included in future reports.
