Heavy use of residential streets during closure of Big Bend and Hanley
ST. LOUIS - Since the closures of Hanley Road and Big Bend Boulevard over I-64, many motorists are choosing to use narrow residential streets in Richmond Heights as north-south alternatives during their morning and evening commutes. This has resulted in dangerous conditions for pedestrians and sideswipe crashes with parked vehicles.
The New I-64 Project and the City of Richmond Heights would like to remind you of the following traffic tips:
- When possible, use the main alternate routes that MoDOT has suggested.
- Brentwood Boulevard - newly paved and striped.
- McCausland Avenue - plenty of room for larger volumes of rush hour traffic.
- I-170 to Eager Road/Hanley Road - designed to carry more traffic and will continue to be a good alternate route throughout the early summer months
- If you are experiencing congested travel, try shifting your commute time. A difference of 15-30 minutes can improve your trip during rush hours.
- Please be patient: Hanley Road is schedule to open early this summer.
- If you must use the smaller residential streets in Richmond Heights:
- PLEASE slow down in residential neighborhoods.
- Yield to pedestrians and cars pulling out of driveways.
- Be particularly mindful of children in these areas.
- Be courteous: Drive as if you were driving through your own neighborhood.
- Be patient and allow yourself plenty of time. These are narrow, curving streets with a speed limit of 20 mph or lower.
