ST. LOUIS - The New I-64 project included planting 3,400 trees, 6,200 shrubs and acres of new grass. In an effort to ensure the successful growth and care of these new plants, the Missouri Department of Transportation has developed a new landscape sponsor program for the new stretch of I-64 in St. Louis City and County.
"We are looking to the business community to help take care of the landscape investment we have made along I-64," said MoDOT District Engineer Ed Hassinger. "The new interchanges have been planted and if kept up they will serve as a welcoming front door to these communities. The sponsorship program allows businesses to invest in their front door, maintain the landscaping and be recognized for their efforts on a sponsorship sign.
MoDOT has contracted with an administering company, Adopt-A-Highway Litter Removal Service of America, Inc. With a maintenance fee, the company contracts local landscapers to mow and take care of the plants.
MoDOT currently has four sponsors: BJC/St. Louis Children's Hospital/Washington University Medical Center at the Kingshighway interchange, City of St. Louis Parks Department at the Hampton interchange, SSM St. Mary's Health Center at the Big Bend interchange, and The Brickman Group has one of the I-170 ramps. Space is available for interested companies at all the I-64 interchanges between Spoede Road and Kingshighway Blvd.
"This is a pilot program designed after similar efforts in other major cities, such as Chicago," said Hassinger. "If we are successful with interested sponsorship along the new I-64 interchanges, we intend to expand the program to the other St. Louis interstates."
The new landscape sponsorship signs will be installed at the four sponsored locations and a few other space available locations on Monday.
